HPC-Waves Chair at Arkinova Business Generator
The team of the High Performance Computing of Waves (HPC-Waves) chair is now based at the Arkinova Business Generator in Anglet. They are working on the impact of ocean waves on the Basque coast, under the supervision of Dr. Volker Roeber, an international expert in numerical wave modelling.
In early February, Volker Roeber, along with his team of three PhD students and four trainees, moved into a large facility at the Arkinova Business Generator. Since January 2019, the aim of the HPC-Waves chair of excellence has been to develop quick and reliable numerical models that take into account the complex physical characteristics of the Basque coast, with the ambition of understanding the hazards as well as the potential in terms of marine energy.
As part of the E2S project of the University of Pau and the Pays de l'Adour (UPPA), the chair is co-funded by the Basque Country Community and the Nouvelle Aquitaine Region. The chair aims to develop solutions for predicting and mitigating coastal flooding and erosion hazards as well as local marine renewable energy (MRE) applications for production systems.
Its research activities are in line with the work conducted by the wave-structure interactions team in the IPRA-SIAME applied research lab for mechanical and electrical engineering at the UPPA in Anglet, especially involved in the MAREA and EZPONDA projects led by the Basque Country Community.
Volker Roeber works at the ISA BTP and the IUT Montaury as a researcher/professor on the topic of renewable marine energy.
In addition to its offices, the HPC-Waves chair team has space in the technical facility of the Arkinova Activity Generator where experiments can be conducted. A small wave simulator is currently set up there until a much larger model is set up, planned in the future ISALAB building, which will host the training and research activities of the ISA BTP school on the Arkinova campus.
