UPPA, from local to international

Under the direction of Richard Chbeir, the IT laboratory of the University of Pau and the Pays de l’Adour (LIUPPA) works on applied informatics projects at international level and also collaborates with the Basque Coast Technology Park ecosystem.

“Created in 2000, LIUPPA brings together 35 lecturer-researchers and around twenty doctoral students, post-docs and engineers. UPPA’s teams are divided across three sites of the University of Pau and the Pays de l’Adour : Pau, Anglet and Mont-de-Marsan. We are lecturer-researchers, so I teach Informatics and devote time to research” explained Richard Chbeir, director of this laboratory since January 2016.

The laboratory is organised into two teams with one focusing on software engineering and modelling and the other on information processing and distributed interactions. “Our business is directed more specifically towards informatics with complementary skills which cover a wide software spectrum: from the acquisition of data to its use. To supply part of our funding, we respond to regional, European and international calls for tender”, stated Richard Chbeir.

Major companies fund doctorates and also help UPPA to expand. So UPPA is working on a flood detection system via a sensor system in Guatemala and Costa Rica. Being based at the Arkinova Technology Park, UPPA also collaborates with the surrounding ecosystem, following the example of a European project carried out with the Nobatek centre on the optimisation of energy consumption in buildings.
