The Baitykool project printed in 3D at Arkinova

The Arkinova Activity Generator is taking part in the Baitykool project for the construction of a housing prototype suitable for very hot climates, as part of the international competition “Solar Decathlon Middle East Dubai-2018”. The mock-up for the project was created in the digital modelling room of the Activity Generator.

Solar Decathlon Middle-East is a competition open to universities all over the world and twenty teams were selected for the final which will take place in Dubai in October 2018. “The challenge is for our team of students to construct a 90m2 solar powered housing prototype in ten days” explained Philippe Lagiere, senior lecturer atthe University of Bordeaux and project coordinator. The University of Bordeaux has responded to this call for projects along with five partners from three countries (France, Palestine and Dubai) to develop a project entitled Baitykool.

Baitykool, the only French project selected, is involving around thirty partner companies in its pilot project, as well as public bodies and entities such as the Nobatek/NEF4 technology centre based at Arkinova Technology Park. The name Baitykool is based on a combination of the Arabic word “Baity” which means “my house” or “my kingdom”, and the English word “cool”. Around forty students make up the team for the Baitykool project.

Three key points were expressed by the team for this project: a bold architectural design, intelligent and innovative solutions, and a multicultural and multi-sector vision. In September, part of the team went to the Arkinova Activity Generator. “Here there is fairly unique equipment well-suited to the project” said Philippe Lagiere. So, the students used the 3-D printers in the digital modelling room to construct the mock-up of their prototype and an assembly of bulky parts is also planned. The expertise and participation of stakeholders in the Arkinova ecosystem - and in particular of  Nobatek/INEF4 in the production of the mock-up - are also invaluable.
