Sophia Genetics moves onto the Izarbel site

The Swiss start-up managed by Bayonne native Jurgi Camblong is setting up a research & development centre at the Izarbel Technology Park. Sophia Genetics is a leader in evidenced-based medicine, and was ranked amongst the smartest companies in the world by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Created in 2011 by the Basque Jurgi Camblong and the two Swiss Pierre Hutter and Lars Steinmetz, the Sophia Genetics start-up offers digital solutions to hospitals for the analysis of genetic data generated by the DNA sequencing of their patients. Sophia Genetics’ expertise is based on clinical genomics and artificial intelligence and allows healthcare professionals to access a genetic database. 

The SOPHIA AI technology developed by Sophia Genetics is used by more than 360 hospitals in 55 countries. This innovative technology has already allowed the genomic profiles of 140,000 patients to be analysed. Through its algorithms, Sophia Genetics decodes the genetic data generated by hospitals all over the world and allows them to identify changes which are characteristic of genetic diseases and speed up diagnoses.

With 150 employees (half of whom are in Switzerland at the Lausanne headquarters) and having raised thirty million dollars this summer, Sophia Genetics was ranked last June as 30^th out of the fifty smartest companies in the world by the prestigious MIT On 30 October, Jurgi Camblong was also awarded the EY - Entrepreneur of the year prize in the “Emerging Entrepreneur” category.

This autumn, Sophia Genetics is establishing a research & development centre at Izarbel and recruiting a dedicated team. The environment offered by the Technology Park, and in particular the proximity toESTIA involved in research on man-machine interactions, were decisive factors in this company of the future’s choice.
