Wikicampers Launches Geolocation Service for RVs
The recreational vehicle (RV) and campervan rental platform located on the Izarbel campus in Bidart offers two geolocation devices in order to warn vehicle owners in case of attempted theft.
Wikicampers is an online platform listing peer-to-peer ads for RV and campervan rentals. The platform offers a suite of services (insurance, secured payment, rental contracts, practical tips) to optimize transactions. Last May, Wikicampers innovated by launching “Wikisitter”, the first concierge service making it possible to entrust a professional concierge with the vehicle inspection upon pick-up and return. With Wikitrack and Wikitrack pro, the company now has two geolocated devices with different features.
“We came up with the idea after listening to the community’s concerns. The most recurrent question was about whether or not the vehicle would be covered in case of theft. Even though our insurance contract covers that risk, we wanted to go a step further to reassure owners and give them a sense of security,” explained Marion Woirhaye, co-founder of the start-up created at the Izarbel Technology Park in 2012, and whose staff has now reached about 20.
Wikicampers has developed a secure offer based on Wikitrack and Wikitrack Pro devices allowing owners to receive alerts about their vehicle’s movement. Wikitrack is a self-contained GPS tracking system with 30-day battery life that locates the vehicle via the Wikicampers app. Wikitrack Pro uses a device mounted permanently on the vehicle that requires electrical wiring on the engine. Via the Wikicampers app, it indicates when doors are opened and makes it possible to stop the engine remotely (at speeds under 20 km/h). The two GPS tracking devices have coverage worldwide and therefore offer a new service to Wikicampers platform users.
